Analytical methods and physical chemistry
Our analytical methods and physical chemistry research is at the forefront of the development of new NMR, mass spectrometric, optical, spectroscopic and electrochemical methods to characterise chemical systems.
Our researchers
Staff who work in this research area are associated with the University’s research institutes. Biophysical analysis is a focus of several of our researchers based in the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology.
In collaboration with the University’s Dalton Nuclear Institute, spectroscopic characterisation of the actinides and development of other advanced laser spectroscopic techniques are performed. We also have links with the University’s activity at the Diamond Synchrotron at Harwell, Oxfordshire through our development of a programme of research on synchrotron-based X-ray spectroscopy/scattering and neutron scattering.
In the Chemistry Building, the focus of our NMR methodology research is the development of new techniques in high resolution NMR spectroscopy.
The Manchester electrochemistry group focuses on the development of new electrochemical techniques and their applications, including those relating to 2D materials.
